Everything was fine until the Pharos.
Everything went just as it was supposed to before that. The fall of Dalmasca and her time with the Resistance, the capture in the sewers of Dalmasca, the escape from the Dreadnought Leviathan, the journey to Raithwall's Tomb. Finding Belias, the dynast-king's Esper. The nethicite-induced explosion of the Leviathan and the journey to Bur-Omisace. The events in the Stilshrine of Miriam, the infiltration of Draklor Laboratory, and the wild-goose chase to Giruvegan.
Even after the meeting with the Occuria and the ascent of the Pharos, things seemed to be going well. Just as they had countless times in countless universes, Ashe and Vaan defied the Occuria, Dr. Cid died, Reddas was obliterated in the destruction of the Sun-Cryst, and the Sky Fortress Bahamut loomed over Rabanastre.
They'd run across the Espers before, of course. Belias, Mateus, Shemhazai, Hashmal, Famfrit... And then the old geomancer of Jahara told them of the mightiest of the Espers, slumbering Zodiark. To Ashe, this seemed like just the thing they needed to fight the Bahamut. So, to prove their worth to seek out Zodiark, they searched for the rest of the Espers.
The last they found was Ultima, hidden in the strange maze of Giruvegan's Great Crystal. They wandered in the steadily-darkening passages for days, and when they finally found her, the battle seemed to last an eternity. At last, though, the High Seraph fell, and it was Ashe who formed the pact between Esper and mortal with her.
As the pact was completed, Ultima smiled.
That should have been their first clue. They'd expected her to rail against her binding, raging like so many of the others had done. But she simply smiled beatifically as she was bound into the service of the future queen of Dalmasca.
The effects began to show soon afterward, but they were ignored. Ashe's skin, always unusually pale, began to take on an almost imperceptible bluish cast, and she summoned Ultima much more frequently than any of the others called upon the Espers bound to them. Even her voice changed, bearing odd harmonics as though someone else with a voice of unearthly beauty was echoing the words as they were said. Her manner, too, grew cold and distant. Still, Ultima seemed to obey her as faithfully as any of the other Espers - though Ashe's orders in dealing with enemies grew more ruthless, even inhuman.
She seemed like her old self for a time as they assaulted the Bahamut - determined, certainly, but human, emotional.
They'd underestimated the power that the rogue Occuria Venat gave Vayne. When the two merged and made the enormous airship part of them, becoming the creature known as the Undying, all of them were nearly killed. But suddenly there was a flash of light and, unbidden, Ultima appeared. Not only that, she replaced Ashe and blasted the Undying with holy power. They, and the world, were saved, but at a terrible price.
The most ruthless and cruel of the Espers, the leader of their rebellion, Ultima herself, now inhabited the body of a young woman who had to rebuild a kingdom and the world. The two minds, Ashe and Ultima, constantly battle even now for dominance, neither ever managing to retain control for more than a few weeks at a stretch.
Meta Stuffs: Ashe is taken from a few months after what would, in the original universe, be the end of FFXII. No Revenant Wings here, I'm afraid.
